It was 2012 when I first watched this movie and I remember that I liking it so much until I consider this as one of the best romcom for me. Now on 2017 I watched it again to recall what it is that I like about the movie very much.
So I watched it after I watched About Time, and I fell veryyy in love with the movie. So I guess I should watch Love Actually too since its also a movie directed by the same Richard Curtis.
It's an omnibus movie which consist of multiple love stories. Some get a bigger portion than others. Some just appear as a side story. But each of it represent every love victims that could happened. The friendzoned, the single, the old married couple, the child, the widower, the secret admirer, the cheater and the cheated on. So I guess it meant for every love aspects that exist.
These are my chosen favourite happy ending story:
1. Jamie (Colin Firth) and Aurelia (Sienna Guillory) (the scene when they dive into the pond trying to catch Jamie's paperwork and each saying something oppositely with different language but no one aware is HILARIOUS)
2. John (Martin Freeman) and Judy (Joanna Page), actually the very moment I saw them I was disgusted as hell. I wouldn't like what I see but I like what it turned out to be. I love the idea that even tho they were making physically contact with bare skin, the reason why they both felt very comfortable with each other is because the way they could have small talks in between. Which they never felt with anyone else before. (And how they still felt very awkward during their first kiss.)
These are my chosen favorite sad ending story:
1. Harry (Alan Rickman) and Karen (Emma Thomson). Their relationships is one of those
oh please it's possible to happen moment. It's about getting old and the fact that we couldnt avoid that. We will have wrinkled faces and widen stomach or loosen thighs. And the fact that man always like what they see, so will they still be in love with their wives when they're not young and beautiful anymore? It's not a suprise when we see a man wants a younger woman to
have fun with.
The thing about their story in the movie is that we couldn't see the conclusion right away in the end. Are they making up or not. Since its a kiss on a cheek not on a lips. Even if they reconcile, it would be for the sakes of the children not for the sakes of the relationships.
2. Sarah and Karl. What it is that's more miserable when you can finally be together with the love of your life that you've been secretly admiring for as long as you can remember?
We can feel the eagerness about Sarah making the first move. And the excitement when they finally have a slow dance. And grumble when Sarah has to answers all her brother calls, interrupting what might have been with Karl. In the end they're not being together because Sarah felt has the responsible to give her brother full attention because their parents is not there anymore, so zero time for love.
What I Like About The Movie Itself.
The Intro and The Ending
Both the intro and the ending are set on the airport. At the intro, the narrator which sounded so much like Colin Firth said that the airport is the place that can makes us believe again that
love actually is around. So its obvious that for no reason at all everyone is returning back from somewhere. (except for Jack and Judy, they were leaving somewhere else)
Though when all the characters has reunited, it doesnt end there. There's a multiple scenes on one frame that shows people we're not aware about, just a buch of strangers that are genuinely happy to see their loved one back. Which it is what you will actually see when you go to an airport.
The Transition
If we paid attention during every transition to one story to another. We can hear that there's a song in between, connecting them. (the song of the funeral to the wedding, or Sam's drums to the office chrismast party) Some cases it's the use of the dialogue. Like when in the radio station when Billy was being interviewed, the broadcaster mentioned about the prime minister and next it cut to the scene of the prime minister itself.
Honorable Mention
Rowan Atkinson Cameo
During this scene, somehow we can feel what Alan Rickman felt when he's sneaking out to buy his secretary a necklace but Rowan Atkinson has to "wrapped the gift" first and it was one hell of a gift wrapping.
That's all my review of Love Actually movie, I really liked it but I'm not sure if I would watch it with my children around. Still one of my best romcom! :)
