I know it's 10 years late to review this movie. But the legend still lives through the world. This movie has effected many lives i supposed, and i just see how that's working.
First this movie was all about one thing: a family, a pretty fucked-up family, but they are all fucked-ups that unites together.
Richard (a father), Sheryl (a mother), Dwayne (a son), Olive (a daughter), Frank (an uncle) and Edwin (a grandfather).
A winner-obsessed father who's a speaker of a 'how to be success' program. A loving mother (i think she's the only one with no emotional problem). A son who wanted to be in air force and fly jets, and has sworn to secrecy to never speak a word again. A daughter who's dying to be a beauty pageant. A gay uncle with a suicidal problem. And a crack smocking porn lover grandpa.
Each of the family has their own character, and the mom being the only one who's settled with everything. This movie is focused on the daughter who has to go to California from Alberqueque to enter a Little Miss Sunshine contest. The family were all confused because they don't have enough money to fly, so the father decided to drove a mini van with hesitation at first because the trip itself is not pretty cheap. But he learns that his friend named Stan would sell his motivational program and get the money back.
The character that has been taking my attention from the very start was absolutely is Dwayne. He hasn't said a word and he always writes down what he wanted to say. He's the kinda child in the family who hates everyone and think each part of the family is stupid. Everybody has that part of the family.
The uncle is very heart-warming as well. Eventho he had suicidal problems. But he could get off pretty well and having this kinda bond with Dwayne. He tries to support him at times, not remembering he had once wants to kill himself.
I like the grandpa figure who always support Olive, unlike her dad who wants her to win no matter what. Throughout the movie, Olive and grandpa has been "practicing" for the contest, but nobody knows what, except for the growling face they practiced at the hotel. But he still smoking heroine, which make him dead in the half part of the movie.
Altho Richard, the Dad, didn't get the money because Stan's failure to sell his program. Which make Sheryl, his wife really sad. Richard takes responsible and meet him at night to confront him.
The movie was full dedicated to Olive, but the storyline was pretty much telling about the other part of the family. And how to keep this family back together after going on through so much stuffs.
The very scene that has touch me for the first time was when the van broken and everybody has to push for it to be able to start the engine again. It shows that family is supposed to be a team to make things work. No matter how much you hate them. And that scene was done much more till the end of the movie.
I like how Dwayne has finally decided to speak up eventho his first word was "FUUUUCK!!!" and since then i feel the bond of the family getting stronger.
Everybody in the family supports Olive to be in the pageant. But when its talent time, everybody was begging her to turn down the contest, because they know its impossible for her to win. Comparing her costume to the other. But Olive still wants to do it, for her grandpa. And the next thing you know, every part of the family is dancing with her. It's weird and awkward to see, makes you think "whaaaa?" but that's just how family works right? They wont let you go down on your own.
This family movie describes more than a happy-lovey family, it says about the reality in the world. And that family should sticks together no matter how bad the situation is.
Here are some quotes that I like:
"For better or for worse, we're still your family." -Sheryl to Dwayne.
"Losers are the one who's afraid of not winning so much, they don't even wanna try." -Grandpa to Olive.
"Life is a never ending beauty pageant. There's school, then college, then work. It's never gonna stop. We just gotta do what we like. Fuck the rest." -Dwayne to Frank.
"All those year he suffered, those was the best year of his life. Cause they made him who he was. All those years he's happy? You know, total waste." Frank to Dwayne.
It's a cool family movie, I'd give it an 8.5/10 :)
